Dig into almost any modern occult or neo-pagan system of thought, from Theosophy to Wicca, and you’ll find Crowley’s name and ideas. In some countercultural circles, Crowley is a hip signifier, like Che Guevara, but not much more. Various New Age groups utter his name in reverence or mention it as a matter of course, as physicists reference Newton or Einstein. The evangelical Christians I was raised among whispered his name in horror or pronounced it with a sneer as a staunch and particularly insidious enemy of the faith. No other man has so many strange tales told of him.”Īs with all such notorious, larger-than-life figures, who Crowley was depends on whom you ask. A 1915 Vanity Fair profile put it well: “a legend has been built up around his name. So who was Aleister Crowley? A sexually liberated genius, a spoiled, egomaniacal dilettante, a campy charlatan, a skeptical trickster, a cruel and abusive manipulator, a racist misogynist, a Nietzschean superman and “icon of rebellion” as the narrator of his story above calls him? Some part of all these, perhaps. Crowley pops up in Hemingway’s A Movable Feast and he has inspired a number of literary characters, in for example Somerset Maugham’s The Magician and Christopher Isherwood’s A Visit to Anselm Oakes. Burroughs, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, the Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Ozzy Osbourne, Robert Anton Wilson, Timothy Leary, Genesis P-Orridge, and countless others. After his death in 1947, his life and thought played a role in the work of William S. Crowley rubbed elbows with Aldous Huxley, Alfred Adler, Roald Dahl, and Ian Fleming. Though accused of betraying the British during the First World War, it appears he actually worked as a double agent, and he had many ties in the British intelligence community. He’s indirectly connected to the development of the jet propulsion system-through his American protégée, rocket scientist Jack Parsons-and of Scientology, through Parsons’ partner in magic (and later betrayer), L. During his brief sojourn in the occult society Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, he exerted some influence on William Butler Yeats, if only through their mutual antipathy (Crowley may have inspired the “rough beast” of Yeats’ “ The Second Coming”). As a poet, he published some of the most scandalous verse yet printed, under the name George Archibald Bishop in 1898. Crowley traveled the world conducting magical rituals, writing textbooks on magic (or “Magick” in his parlance), founding esoteric orders, and interacting with some of the most significant artists and occult thinkers of his time.Īs a mountaineer, Crowley co-lead the first British expedition to K2 in 1902 (the photo above shows him during the trek). But his biography is inarguably fascinating-creepy but also heroic in a Faustian way-and his presence is nearly everywhere inescapable. Most people found his overbearing personality unbearable, and he squandered his wealth and lived much of life penniless. His raunchy, hysterical poetry is frequently amusing. All but the most adept find most of his occult writing incomprehensible (though it’s laced with wit and some profundity). But despite his pronounced disdain for all social conventions and pieties, his story is much more complicated and interesting than the cardboard cutout villain this description suggests.īorn Edward Alexander Crowley in 1875 to wealthy British Plymouth Brethren brewers, Crowley very early set about replacing the religion of his family and his culture with a variety of extreme endeavors, from mountaineering to sex magic and all manner of practices derived from a synthesis of Eastern religions and ancient and modern demonology. Crowley would not wish to be remembered as one anyway. When we’re told by the voice-over that Crowley was a “black magician, drug fiend, sex addict, and traitor to the British people,” we are not disposed to meet a very likable character. And it may indeed take some liberties with Crowley’s biography. #Alseter owely tv#The documentary-with its ominous music and visual effects reminiscent of American Horror Story’s jarring opening credits-takes the sensationalistic tone of true crime TV mixed with the dim lighting and hand-held camerawork of paranormal, post- Blair Witch entertainments. It’s no surprise that the particular treatment of Crowley’s life above adopts the tabloid description of the magician. Released in 1976, this was Fender’s first semi-hollow body offering. Later popularity in the alt-rock scene has led to a high level of interest among collectors. The Fender Mustang combined a short scale with a unique tremolo arm and two single-coil pickups. Released in 1964, the solid body design was a reinvention of the Fender guitar student line. A notable inclusion is the tremolo lock used to keep it from going out of tune. The off-waist body shape was designed around the needs of guitarists in a sitting position. Released in 1958, it was marketed toward jazz bands but found a larger audience in California’s surf culture. It finally gained large scale popularity in the 80s and 90s among the punk and alt-rock scene. At the time of release, it was the highest quality Fender guitar on the market. Launched in 1962, it’s notable for using a switching system with separate lead and rhythm circuits. 1965 FENDER MUSICMASTER MOVIEFender Coronado gained sudden notoriety when used by Elvis in the movie Speedway. The guitar uses a maple neck and rosewood fretboard. It’s the first hollow body design from Fender and has a unique aesthetic. Released in 1965, it offers a rare divergence from the typical Fender style. The Duo-Sonic was originally issued only in a tanned “Desert Sand” color. The guitar is also notable for the shorter scale neck, designed to make it more suitable for younger guitarists. It uses the typical Fender bolt-on construction. It features two Duo-Sonic single-coil pickups. Launched in 1956 as a student model guitar. This was technically a Musicmaster II but was usually just called a Musicmaster. In 1964, it was redesigned with a choice of 24 inches or 22.5-inch scale neck. It features a single-piece maple neck and fingerboard. Fender Electric Guitar Models Fender MusicmasterĬreated in 1956, this was Fender’s first 3/4 scale student-model. Renamed to Fender Musical Instruments Corporation (FMIC), ownership was again in the hands of people who were first and foremost dedicated to music. In 1985 ownership was again sold, this time to the Fender Electric Instrument Manufacturing Company. Design changes during this period were often due to cost cutting measures that many musicians disagreed with. The highly mobile and fun portrayal of Fender’s design led quite smoothly into the rock and roll lifestyle of the late 50s and early 60s.įender would eventually agree to an offer by CBS and sold his brand for $13 million in 1965. He also had brilliant marketing which not only worked with the evolving culture of the time but might have even helped shape it. Fender was able to keep up with demand in a way that his competition couldn’t thanks to his modular design. But other factors helped launch the brand into the public eye. During that year he would also create his first guitar to sport the now famous F logo.īy 1950 he was ready to take his now perfected prototypes onto the market. Finally, in 1946, Leo headed out on his own to create Fender Electric Instrument Company. This is where Leo first saw the potential in designing and selling custom audio equipment. Leo’s tinkering with the designs would lead him to co-found a small company called K & F Manufacturing Corp. He was especially intrigued by the problems he’d spot in amplifiers. His specialty was radio, but he also had a steady stream of customers who wanted him to look at various items related to creating music. The Fender brand began with the work of an inventor named Leo Fender. But when one looks closer there’s a lot which even experts might be surprised to find within the brand’s history. But they’ll still be able to give a general description of it. Ask someone what a Strat is and they might be light on details. It’s a brand whose reputation is strong enough to even reach outside that sphere and into the general public knowledge. Fender guitars are a rarity in the music industry.

CANT GET RID OF A QUICKBUILD CANTEEN PRISON ARCHITECT UPDATEWe will be starting beta testing on the tablet version very soon - sign up to our mailing list if you want to be a tablet tester.Īs a result of the tablet focus this month, this alpha update is a touch lighter than usual, but we did find time to add some serious game updates for alpha 30. We spent a lot of time this month working on the tablet versions of Prison Architect, and the game is now running very nicely indeed on iPads and Android. One line of the song is "fear is the heart of love" which defies what people usually associate love with. This song goes beyond everything, and basically defies the stereotypes of love. This song goes beyond religion, i dont think its right to label this song as anything, especially by religion. If you can find that connection with another person, the fear of the unknown subsides, and you can overcome anything with the unselfish peace that connection to humanity can provide. They "hold each other" within their being into "the darkest of rooms", the ultimate unknown, death. The sense of fulfillment in this world, and the promise of a spark in the next, while carrying the new being the two have created into the next. The end holds no fear or panic, "It's nothing to cry about". "You and me have seen everything to see.And the soles of your shoes are all worn down." They have experienced the world through the eyes of each other, and there is no exceeding this plateau in this world. Satisfaction in the sense of being sated, there is no more desire, or longing, or regrets, guilt, pride, jelousy. 'Fear is the heart of love', sounds wrong and will lead to anything but satisfaction, so don't try to convince them and never go back. Religion is used to illuminate the way most people perceive personal interactions, where control, possession and power rule the interactions between the two. They have become more than a single entity, in the sense of changes within them, the individuals sense the oneness that binds everyone in the manifestation of their completeness. The two will follow each other into the dark because a large part of them resides in the other. "That they both are satisfied", I think, refers not only to Heaven and Hell, but also the relationship. If the constructs of Heaven and Hell areat peace within the persons own mind, then being carried into the unknown holds no fear for them. The "tunnels to gates of white" are not as peacefully blissful as the entwining of the two. The development of a relationship to the point that the seperation between the individuals becomes indistinct. To me, this song embodies a lot of the ideas contained within zen-like philosophies, directed specifically toward a very personal relationships between two people on the inevitable road to oblivion we all travel. But I'll check the site regularly to see how my objective approach did! :D If I got it wrong, obviously rate it low. I have tried to be as objective as possible. I (writer) will not be stating my opinion. They have completed their life and their time has come. The next verse explains how the singer and the addressed have finished their life - They've seen all there is to see, and they are tired, as "the time for sleep is now", implying that the singer and addressed are ready to die. This fuels the religion, being the "heart" of the "love" of the religion. The followers fear going to "hell", and therefore will follow the religion to escape the "hell" they fear. The song is also partially about the fact that they clearly do not believe in a particular religion, and that they believe that "fear is the heart of love" for most religion. If an afterlife doesn't exist, or the person the singer is addressing is rejected from having an afterlife, the singer will "follow you into the dark" They will follow the addressed into nothingness, because they would rather be with the addressed in nothingness than be alone in an afterlife. Hes ready to follow is loved one into nothingness, emptiness, thoughtlessness.the dark "Soles of your shoes are all worn down the time for sleep is now" - Hes tired and he's ready to sleep. He has lived a long life and experienced many things and been to many places. He wishes there was no fear of hell nor reward of heaven. He never went back because he disagrees with the nun (and so should everyone). The fear of hell and punishment is what drives so many people to be religious. This line is SO important to the meaning of this song. "I held my tongue as she told me son, fear is the heart of love, so I never went back." FEAR IS THE HEART OF LOVE. Yes, this song is a love song, but I think it is equally a song about religion. The words "dark" and "black" in this song are not just referring to the absence of color, but rather of nothingness altogether. This prayer has become closely associated with 12 Step programs, offering strength and calm in pursuit of a more stable life.įirst, through uttering these words, we are acknowledging God’s existence and recognizing that He is truly the only one who can bring us inner peace regardless of chaotic circumstances. The words have special meaning to those who are often “looking for peace” at a time of turmoil, despair, or uncertainty in their lives. That I may be reasonably happy in this life and supremely happy with Him Trusting that He will make all things right if I surrender to His Will Taking, as He did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it So that I may be reasonably happy in this lifeĪnd supremely happy with You forever in the next.God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change Ĭourage to change the things I can and wisdom to know the difference.Īccepting hardships as the pathway to peace Trusting that You will make all things right There is serenity in knowing that in the end, God will make all things right.Īccepting hardship as a pathway to peace There is love in accepting the world as it is. But he did not accept the sinful world as it is he came to change the world and to testify to the truth. This part of The Serenity prayer points to a path to spiritual growth. The last part of The Serenity Prayer is: taking, a s Jesus did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it trusting that You will make all things right if I surrender to Your will. Not only that, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance perseverance, character and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out His love into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, whom He has given us. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we stand. If I lose my life, I can say, it is well, it is well with my soul. I am not afraid of anything that can kill my body because it cannot kill my soul. I have peace with God through my Lord Jesus Christ. I believe that hardships and struggles and failure are a pathway to character. The one thing I disagree with in Reinhold Niebuhr’s Prayer of Serenity is the idea that we should accept hardships as a pathway to peace. I’ve even taken up watching and listening to the birds in my backyard. During the pandemic, I have been enjoying my quiet time in the morning with a cup of coffee before I head to the gym or my home office. These moments of joy are the spice of life. As Jesus said, each day has enough trouble of its own.Įven in difficult times, there are moments of joy – moments that should be treasured. But there is no point in living my life for tomorrow. And I pin my hopes on something in the future (my retirement). Instead of living for today, I anticipate and worry about the challenges I will face tomorrow. I have to admit that I am a natural born worrier. Millions of people have lost their jobs and face financial hardship. Millions of people have been infected already and the death toll rises daily. Many of us are living under stay-at-home orders, perhaps working remotely, keeping a safe six feet distance from other people, and wearing masks in public. Is this not a perfect prayer for times such as these? Our lives have been disrupted by a pandemic. God grant me the serenity to live one day at a time. But there is much more to The Serenity Prayer than the lines I’ve memorized.Īccepting hardships as the pathway to peace. The first part of the prayer encourages people like me to change the things we can control and to accept the things we can’t. God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference. I know the first four lines of The Serenity Prayer by heart. Oh, how I pray for serenity, that blessed state of being at peace and untroubled when things aren’t the way I want them to be. I wish the artist had used the words Serenity and Peace or Serene and Peaceful. Yet in my perfectionist mind, the noun Serenity and adjective Peaceful don’t go together. There is nothing more serene to my land-locked mind than a rare, blissful walk on the beach. One of the pictures has the word Serenity on it and the other has the word Peaceful.
